A tale of courage and survival

Ruiz’s story was featured in Dallas Magazine in January 2016. His proud son, a former student of mine, sent me the link. I was fascinated when I read the piece. A year later, Angel was in Barcelona to attend the World Mobile Congress, so we set up a meeting on 2 March 2017 and then a second one the following day.

Angel had just turned sixty. He talked to me in Spanish and immediately we felt the connection. He has a genuine interest in academic life. Before we started the interview, he asked a few quick questions about my research and teaching. After only ten minutes, it felt like we had known each other for a long time.

‘In an industry like telecommunications, everything is constantly changing,’ Angel said. ‘Even the leaders of big corporations change jobs frequently. For example, just two months ago, Hans Vestberg, the president and CEO of Ericsson left the company.’

He had worked for Angel from 2001 to 2002 when Vestberg was chief financial officer of the company’s North American operations. Amid the hustle and bustle of the World Mobile Congress, the pace of change appears to be even more rapid. Angel talks slowly, as though trying to compensate for the speed of change, taking his time to reflect, as well as citing specific examples to illustrate his points.
